When Comfort Becomes a Trap: The True Cost of Compromising Your Faith

Christin Slade Avatar

Discover the true cost of choosing comfort over obedience. Learn how soft, feel-good faith can quietly pull you away from spiritual growth and truth.

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
2 Timothy 4:3

We are living in a time where anything you want to validate can be found taught somewhere — whether it’s true or not. We’ve seen this in the world. But have you noticed it’s in the Church, too? It’s sneaky and subtle. That’s the way the Enemy works. Slyly.

Eve had been struggling in her marriage. It wasn’t abusive, but it was hard. Lonely. Unfulfilling. She prayed about it, but when nothing changed right away, she began to wonder if maybe she was meant for something more. One day, while scrolling, she saw a post:

“God didn’t create you to be miserable. You deserve to be happy.”

It hit her heart. It felt like a confirmation. The more she thought about it, the more she reasoned: *God wouldn’t want this for me. He wants me to be joyful. Maybe joy means leaving.* But deep down, Eve sensed the Spirit prompting her to slow down. Not to make a rash decision.

To bring her hurt before God and ask Him what obedience looked like in *her* situation. Maybe it would mean staying. Maybe it would mean seeking counsel. But she didn’t want to wait for clarity. She just wanted relief. The truth? Sometimes, we don’t need permission to leave—we need patience to listen. We need power to obey *whatever* God says. And He will give it.

[Eve is symbolic, to represent human nature]

[This isn’t about staying in a dangerous situation. If that’s you, please know God sees, cares, and provides help and protection. Get safe. Then listen. Just as dangerous is the happiness message, so can a twisted submission message be. You cannot save your husband. Only God can.]

I’ve been there. I briefly believed the lie that I deserved to be “happy.” But the happiness I was being offered wasn’t lasting nor was it honoring to God. It was based on the things of this world. It left me empty, not happy. This Truth isn’t just about marriage and divorce—it can apply to any part of our lives.

What Does Comfort Truly Cost Us?

1. Closeness with God (John 14:15)
2. Spiritual Maturity (Hebrews 5:14)
3. Power to Overcome Sin (John 8:32)
4. Discernment (2 Timothy 4:3-4)
5. Kingdom Purpose (Luke 9:23)

Reflection

What messages have I believed that made me feel good, but pulled me away from surrender?

Ask the Lord to reveal any places where your heart has chosen comfort over obedience, or affirmation over truth. His conviction never comes to shame you—it comes to set you free.
