Jesus says, “You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
-John 15:14-15
Have you ever thought about what it means to be a friend? True friendship is about more than just receiving; it’s about mutual care, attention, and effort. Imagine if we only sought out a friend when we needed something from them but never gave back—that friendship wouldn’t feel very genuine, would it?
So, how does this idea translate into our relationship with God? He is always giving to us, always there for us, and always forgiving. But are we doing our part to grow closer to Him? Are we investing our hearts and lives in Him, just as He invests in us?
You might wonder, “But what does God really need from me?” That’s the beauty of it: He doesn’t need anything from us, but He wants us—our hearts, our honor, our love, and our friendship. God desires a relationship with us that’s deep and meaningful.
Friendship with God is something far greater than anything we can find in this world. It’s a bond that asks us to follow His guidance and live out His commands, not because we have to, but because we want to. As Jesus said, “You are my friends if you do what I command” (John 15:14). This is about loving God and loving others in real, tangible ways.
How Does Friendship with God Look Practically?
“You are my friends if you do what I command.”
-John 15:14
Loving God means prioritizing Him in our lives. How do we start? By spending time with Him, reading His Word, and letting it shape our hearts. His Word shows us how to love others as He loves us—by being kind, forgiving, and putting others’ needs above our own. When we love others well, we’re reflecting our love for God.
If we find ourselves holding onto hurtful or negative thoughts about others, let’s use it as an opportunity to invite God to work in our hearts. God’s love transforms us, helping us to love even those we find it difficult to love. When we choose to love others, we open our hearts to experiencing God’s love in a fuller way.
Walk in His Word:
As we walk with Him, let’s strive to live out His love daily. Let’s prioritize our time with Him, allowing His presence to fill our lives and flow through us to others. This is the essence of friendship with God.
No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 1 John 4:12
