Encouraging moms to savor the beauty of home & life in Christ

For the Overwhelmed Mom Determined to Bring Order to Her Home and Life

You don’t need to live the “overwhelmed mom” life. Take back your peace through a bit of planning to bring order to your home and life.

It didn’t feel that long ago when I was homeschooling seven kids ages 6-12. Life was busy and chaotic, but it was also full and rewarding. If I had a better system for reducing some of the mess and chaos, though, we all would have dealt less with my mind-mess.

Sometimes we just need a place to put the mind-mess so we can untangle everything and we know what we’re looking at. Homemaking, homeschooling, mothering–they’re all such privileged roles! We want to make sure we’re stewarding well the things God has given us.

Why is planning important for moms?

Moms wear a lot of hats and we need a place to organize it all.

Being an overwhelmed mom is one of the most common hindrances to getting things done. We often trick ourselves into believing that either something will take much longer than it actually does or, in order to make an impact, we need to spend at least a large chunk of time on a task.

But if we have a set routine to take care of the smaller things early on, it leaves space for a bit more time for the larger projects–and we can break them down.

I don’t know about you, but there is often so much to do and so much going on that I forget a lot of it until I pass by it at some point in the day or week.

“Oh man! I still need to put these yard tools away.”

“Oh look, the basket of clean towels still needs to get folded. I’ll get to that later today.”

Walks up into my bedroom “Shoot! I forgot I had a load of clothes in here, too”

Walks through living room “I really need to dust in here”

Planning ahead will take care of this mind-mess and offer a sense of accomplishment, which for me is really important.

Stress-Free Meal Planning

So one of my largest daily stressers was dinner each night. “Mom, what’s for dinner tonight?” was my least favorite question!

But when I plan ahead, oh my goodness the freedom I feel knowing that is done is huuuuge. Just having the mental heaviness lifted helps me focus so much better on other things. It is absolutely worth it to take the time to plan out your meals each week. You can look each day to see what dinner you have planned and prep throughout the day as needed.

Bring Balance to Your Days

Remember the scenes of walking by things that were forgotten? Planning will help minimize small messes and forgotten tasks. When you write things down, you don’t have to remember them. You just need to look at your planner and do the next thing.

In addition, you can list and check off tasks from various areas of home and life that need to be done. All those little tasks that get unintentionally neglected or forgotten, you can spread them out over days, weeks, or months. Write them down so you don’t forget!

For me, I get super focused on tasks inside the house for an extended period of time, so when I go to focus on things outside, like yard maintenance and weeding my gardens, the weeds have all but overtaken my beds already! I need to be able to do a little in this area and then a little in that area so the work doesn’t build up so high that it’s overwhelming.

Make Time for Personal Growth

A lot of moms get stuck here. When I was a new wife and mom, there were a lot of teachings about self-care being selfish. It wasn’t until I had my 3rd child that I realized if I didn’t start taking care of myself in all the ways: physically, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally, I was going to collapse under the weight of unrest.

The care and growth of yourself is not selfish, it’s necessary. While you’ll need to be particular about what activities actually bring refreshing and rejuvenation, planning these into your days and weeks are a must. Communicate with your husband how imperative time for nurturing yourself is. Spend time with the Lord. Meditate on one verse for the whole day if you need to.

I can’t emphasize enough just how important regular exercise is. Get out for a walk. Do a workout from YouTube or an app. Something to move your body daily for 15-30 minutes. Even if it’s two 15-minute workouts; one in the morning, one in the evening. As moms, we can’t afford NOT to make time for physical activity that’s outside the scope of chasing toddlers, vacuuming, and going up and down the stairs for laundry. This activity is still good, but a brisk walk for a consistent 15 minutes is even better.

It will do wonders for your body and your mind. I promise. But you need to plan for these activities to make them happen. Life will try to rob you or guilt will try to stop you. Push through it all. Your family will thank you. That overwhelmed mom feeling will start to dissipate.

  1. […] For you they may be activities like emptying the dishwasher, putting on face cream and a little make up, and brushing your teeth. It all counts! If those are your priorities in the morning, then make them happen. […]
