When life feels overwhelming, God’s Word brings peace and direction. Discover how His truth outshines fear and lights your path.
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Psalm 119:105
Watching the news right now can feel a bit scary and overwhelming. Trade wars. Stock market crashes. Rumors of a recession. Greater violence in Syria. The murder of Christians and the vulnerable. It’s hard to know what to believe or what the future holds. But one thing I know is certain: God is steadfast.
When I focus on what’s happening in the world, it can strike my heart with a bit of fear. It is very overwhelming. But Psalm 119:105 is a great reminder to me of where I should put my focus.
God says do not fear more than one hundred times in the Bible. It’s not a matter of willpower, it’s a matter of trusting God. We give him the lie and let Him give us Truth. When we don’t know what to do next, open His Word and read. He gives us the answers and lights our path for direction. Fear is not what God wants for you.
When life feels overwhelming, His Word illuminates the way. But we won’t see it unless we open our Bible. The joy of revelation when He speaks to us is just fascinating!
His Light is a Heart Shift
Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
When we look beyond the Bible being mere words on a page and see them as a life-giving, guiding, correctional, love letter, we begin to see the light it illuminates on our path.
We won’t see the big picture, but He will show us the next step. When challenging external circumstances loom, He wants us to lean into Him so He can work in us. We can’t always change or control the things around us, but we can choose how we respond. Fear is never the answer.
Allow God’s word to bring comfort and peace. His Word isn’t just words on a page, but life itself. It’s living power that changes us when we let them. We must posture our hearts for that change to be possible.
Fear’s Lie vs God’s Truth
You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.
John 15:33b
Jesus doesn’t sugarcoat the dark. Instead, He outshines it! He knew we’d face the things we’re facing today. It’s one reason He gave us His Word as a lamp. He wants to help us navigate the unknown with Him.
It’s very difficult to do that while we’re listening to the chatter of the world, though. It only feeds more fear and the media thrives on it. Social media feeds on it. Ignore those voices and listen for His. It will not be going the same direction as the world.
Here are a few lies you may believe that are replaced with God’s Truth:
🚫 Fear’s Lie: You are alone.
✅ God’s Truth: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
🚫 Fear’s Lie: The world is out of control.
✅ God’s Truth: “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)
🚫 Fear’s Lie: You don’t have what it takes.
✅ God’s Truth: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The Joy of Hearing Him Speak
The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart; the commandments of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
Psalm 19:8
When life is overwhelming and the world is loud and it can be hard to cut through the noise. His Word is personal and when you open to read, He’s speaking directly to you. Think about that for a second. The God of the universe speaks directly to you right through His Word.
That’s better than any like from a beautiful stranger on social media. It’s better than any attention I could get from someone who doesn’t know the whole me. Social media is such a farce. You could have a million likes on a post but that doesn’t fill you with the love and compassion that Christ can.
The Bible says His Word is sweeter than honey. Honey was like modern-day ice cream in biblical times. Or whatever you see as a treat you delight in. A flavored coffee, perhaps. His Word is sweeter than that. It’s pure delight and satisfaction!
So not only does He light our way, He satisfies us in ways nothing or no one else could. When we trade something out of our control for direction from Him, peace follows. Peace isn’t something we chase; it’s something we receive when we’re aligned with Him. So if we need to chase anything, it’s Jesus. When life feels overwhelming, run to Jesus through the Word and let Him light your path.
Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father we ask for any fears to be replaced with Your Truth. Allow your peace to wash over us as there is so much happening right now. Remind us that none of this surprises you and it’s not too much for you. Help us to focus on what’s right in front of us and change the things we can while letting go of the things we can’t. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
