How to Trust God When You Feel Afraid

Christin Slade Avatar

When you feel afraid and overwhelmed by uncertainty, remember who you belong to. Trust God, find peace in His promises, and rest in your identity in Christ.

”Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” -Isaiah 43:1

You feel it in your chest—tight, heavy, and unspoken. The fear of what’s next.  Our nation is undergoing so many changes, prices continue to rise, and people are afraid for the future. That’s to say nothing of the challenges we face on a personal level in our relationships, job, and all the responsibilities we’re expected to keep up with.

How can I trust God when I’m overwhelmed by fear and feeling disconnected?

The moment you remember whose name is written over your life, fear has no ground to stand on.

In fact, fear is the opposite of love. When people are afraid, we don’t act in love.

The other day, someone cut me off in traffic, and I yelled. Not because I’m rude—but because I was afraid. It triggered something. And just like that, fear stole my peace and love in an instant. It made me angry because the driver seemed to act so selfishly. For all I know, they didn’t do it purposely.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” -Isaiah 43:1

These are the words God spoke to the nation of Israel about its restoration. Even despite their constant disobedience to God, He still protected them. Because He chose them. And, beloved, He chose you, too. (Ephesians 1:4-5)

God wants His people to be comforted by His care for them, not fearful. He reminds them what He’s done for them — rescuing (or redeeming) them from the Egyptians. He did this because He chose them and wants them to know they are safe with Him. They’re His.

He cares about your fears, friend. He wants you to rest in His care for you. Just as God redeemed Israel from slavery, He redeemed you from being a slave to sin. Your sin does not define you; God does. And God has called you by your own name and called you His.

When God redeemed us from sin, He also freed us from fear. Fear arises when we feel uncertain, insecure, or disconnected. When we forget who we are and whose we are, it’s easier for fear to take hold. You belong to the God of the universe!! There is no safer place to be! The things of this world are temporary and a vital way to release fear is to remember: this world is not our home and it’s not all there is. Our faith in the things God says is so powerful and needed in these times.

Cling to the God who chose you and trust that He has you. Don’t let the lies of the enemy rob you of your peace in God. The most practical way to do this: believe what God says in His Word.

It’s very difficult to live out a faith we don’t believe in. We must believe it first. So, when fear rises, pause. Whisper His promises. Write them down. Remember your name is written in His book. That’s how trust grows—in the remembering.

Before you scroll to the next thing, sit for a moment. Whisper, “I am chosen. I am His.” Say it until your heart believes it. Fear doesn’t get the final word—God does.

Read Ephesians 1:4-5 this week and notice how God chose to choose you.
